Personal Profile

Lars Samuelson received his PhD in Physics in 1977, with his research focusing on experimental and theoretical studies of electron-phonon coupling at deep levels in semiconductors. He then conducted postdoctoral research at the IBM San Jose Research Center in California, where he was active in the fields of display technology and band structure calculations. In 1981, he became an Associate Professor of Physics at Lund University, and in 1986, he was appointed Professor of Semiconductor Physics at Chalmers University of Technology/University of Gothenburg. In 1988, he returned to Lund University as a Professor of Semiconductor Electronics in the Department of Physics. It was during this time that he initiated the interdisciplinary research center known as the Nanometer Structure Consortium (later renamed NanoLund), which today comprises more than 400 researchers. Since 2021, he has been appointed a Chair Professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China, where he also serves as the head of the Institute of Nanoscience and Applications (INA).

In 2004, he was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP) in the UK, followed by a Fellowship with the American Physical Society (APS, Materials Physics) in 2009, and an International Fellowship with the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) in 2020. He became a member of the Royal Physiographic Society in 1998, was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA, Physics Class) in 2006, and joined the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) in 2007. In 2008, he was honored as an "Einstein Professor" by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His notable awards include the IUVSTA Science Prize for the triennium 2010–2013 (awarded in 2013), the Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship in Nanoscience (2014), and the Wilhelm Westrup Prize (2018), which recognized his work in translating fundamental materials science into commercial value. In 2022, Lars Samuelson was awarded the Great Gold Medal—the highest honor in engineering science from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences—"for his internationally outstanding contributions as a pioneering researcher and research leader in nanoscience and nanotechnology, and for the utilization of scientific results, particularly in the field of semiconductor technology." In 2023, he was elected a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Lars Samuelson is the founder and chief scientist of four startups dedicated to the commercialization of nanowire and nanomaterial technologies: QuNano AB, GLO AB, Sol Voltaics AB, and Hexagem AB. He is the author of more than 700 articles indexed in Web of Science, with an h-index of 91 (108 according to Google Scholar), and is listed among the top 1% most highly cited researchers. He has delivered over 300 plenary or invited talks at international conferences.
